TRADITIONAL MUGHAL JAALI

One of the traditional features still prominent in many ancient architecture across the map, is the perforated latticed screen design called “Jaali”. 

The Urdu origins of the word is jaal refers to a net.  Flourished in India, in the Mughal Empire during sixteenth-eighteenth century was originally designed to let the high stature women view outside their palaces, versatile enough for proper light and ventilation. At the same time, protecting the ladies from the glare of the outside crowd.

Since Islam forbids any form of idolatry, so Muslim artisans avoided representation of human figures in their designs and hence Jali design in the form of floral and geometric motifs was well famous.

Over a period of time, the intricate latticework pattern gained popularity into art, textile, jewellery etc.
