The quiet alignment of what you love, what you are good at, what the world needs, and what gives your life meaning.

Ikigai

Ikigai is a Japanese philosophy meaning “a reason for being”—the feeling that gives your life purpose and makes each day worth living.

The popular Ikigai symbol brings together four elements:

  • What you love — your passion. (What makes you feel alive?)
  • What you’re good at — your strengths. (What can you do well?)
  • What the world needs — your contribution (What can you meaningfully contribute?)
  • What sustains you — your livelihood (What can support your life?)

Why the symbol resonates so strongly

The four-circle design visually communicates balance and alignment.

You may love something but not be particularly good at it.
You may be good at something but find it meaningless.
You may contribute to society but feel personally unfulfilled.
You may earn well but lack a sense of purpose.

Ikigai represents the harmony between these dimensions.

And psychologically, that makes the symbol powerful: it turns an abstract idea—a meaningful life—into something the eye can immediately understand.

At their intersection lies Ikigai: a life lived with purpose, balance and meaning.

As a symbol, it represents the pursuit of a life that feels deeply aligned—not merely successful.

Symbolic History & Interpretations

1. Traditional Japanese Etymology

In Japan, Ikigai is represented by its kanji characters rather than a graphic symbol:

  • Iki (): "To live" or "life."
  • Gai (甲斐): "Value" or "worth." It derives from kai (seashells), which were prized currency in Heian-period Japan (794–1185 CE).

Core Meaning: "The value of living" or "a reason to wake up in the morning." In traditional Japanese culture, Ikigai is process-oriented. It centers on small daily rituals, mindfulness, and personal joy—it is not tied to career success or making money.

2. The Western Venn Diagram

The popular four-circle graphic is a recent Western creation:

  • 2011: Spanish author Andrés Zuzunaga created a Venn diagram mapping "Purpose" at the intersection of what you love, what you're good at, what the world needs, and what you get paid for.
  • 2014: Entrepreneur Marc Winn replaced "Purpose" at the center with "Ikigai" after learning about Okinawan longevity research, creating the viral diagram used today.

Core Meaning: Outcome-oriented career and professional alignment, focusing heavily on monetization and societal contribution.

Value the Micro-Moments over Grand Milestones

The kanji Gai (甲斐) traces back to rare seashells—small, individual treasures. Ikigai teaches that a meaningful life is built on small daily rituals (a warm morning cup of tea, tending a plant, a brief walk) rather than waiting for major accomplishme

Ikigai

Embrace Kodawari (Pride in the Process)

Kodawari is the Japanese concept of paying attention to detail and pursuing continuous craft improvement for its own sake. Ikigai encourages finding joy in the doing rather than worrying solely about the end product.

Ikigai

Cultivate Connection and Community

In Okinawa, Japan (famous for its high concentration of centenarians practicing Ikigai), life purpose is deeply linked to Moai—close-knit social support groups. Meaningful human connection is essential to longevity and joy.

Ikigai

Start with a Conscious "Why" Every Morning

At its core, Ikigai translates to "a reason to get up in the morning." Setting a simple, intentional focus for each day gives structure and momentum to your routine, no matter how chaotic life gets.
