Hand-Painted Leather Craft

Originally founded by Maharishi Debendra Nath Tagore, father of Sri Rabindranath Tagore.

Later, Rabindranath Tagore and his wife, expert in crafts came together to revive various craft forms of that era. One amongst them is now known as handpainted leather style. The Shantiniketan region in West Bengal is famous for its beautifully handcrafted leather handbags and other accessories available in unique colours and patterns with traditional motifs. 

Hand-painted Leather products are world famous for their appliqué, batik and embossed craft work using touch dying.

The process of burnishing the leather gives it an elegant sheen and brings out the colors. 

The major embossing craft is done by hand and is an intricate process.  After the final leather is made, it is then stitched into the desired product, coated with a lacquer finish for making the product shiny and long lasting.  Shantiniketan products are not only beautiful in appearance, but are also very affordable.

The traditional motifs used for these hand-painted leather products depict the rich cultural heritage of India.

It is a perfect example of superior workmanship of the local artisans.
