Sikki grass craft has been in existence for hundreds of years but the exact age of this craft is uncertain. Sikki is the golden coloured wild grass which is available in abundance in marshy areas of rivers particularly in Northern Bihar. Women use the original form of the grass, dyed with beautiful colours, dried under the sun and then weave into a craft pattern of geometrical intricacy and elegance.
An anecdote which is followed in villages is that every girl child should learn and master the art of sikki craft making so that at the time of her marriage she could carry a collection of sikki made articles with her. The proficiency of a girl was decided by the imagination she has used in creating different designs.
This craft form not only adds colours to our living space nut also highlights the relevance of eco-friendly consumption to restore the ethics for the environment to co-create elements of sustainability.
