Camphor is derived from the bark and wood of the camphor tree. Popularly called as the tree that does not sleep, camphor tree is known as Cinnamomum Camphora. It is an aged evergreen tree majorly located in Borneo islands, Sumatra and Indonesia areas of Asia. Traditionally camphor is derived from the process of distillation from stems.

 

Now for the commercial viability, the camphor is hardly extracted from Camphora tree.

Synthetic camphor is made from synthetic pine oil. This is produced by conversion of terpene hydrocarbons into terpene alcohols. Ideally, meant to be used in the manufacture of chemicals but is recklessly used in camphor industry. It is further treated to appear the same as natural camphor.

 

Organic camphor which has the benefits close to Camphora tree is from distillation of pine tree.

 

 Typically, synthetic camphor is a white powder, whereas the organic camphor forms waxy white granules.

 

Organic camphor rotates polarized light to the right whereas synthetic camphor is optically inactive.

 

So, procuring camphor from the reputed source is very important.
